Bretty…Bretty…Bretty and the Jets. Yes I am stealing the Elton John tune.
NY made a huge deal to acquired Brett “Man without a Country” Favre.
Green Bay insists they are just happy to be moving forward.
So, it appears the drama is finally over.
But, now that it is let’s review what’s transpired.
1. Brett wants to unretire but the Packers insisted they have moved one.
2. Brett says “Trade or release me,” which is a reasonable demand.
3. Green Bay says, “No, stay retired. We have no place for you.”
4. Brett says I am coming back and I’m coming to camp.
5. Green Bay says, “You are talking to Minnesota? That’s illegal!!!!”
6. Green Bay owner Mark Murphy flies to Mississippi to offer Brett a 25 million dollar bribe to stay retired.
7. Favre thinks about the offer for about 2 seconds.
8. Brett calls their bluff and sends ‘unretirement’ paperwork to the Commish.
9. Commish tells both parties to get this shit resolved.
10. Green Bay says, “Brett, come home.”
11. Brett under the impression he is truly welcomed back Thompson, McCarthy and Favre have meetings.
12. The ’truthful’ conversation isn’t a good one. Brett not optimistic.
13. Commish says Minnesota and Brett did nothing wrong.
14. Brett flies home saying his days as Packer are over.
15. Brett mulls over an offer by Tampa, a place they really didn’t want to go.
16. The NY Jets, a longshot in the trade discussion, comes up with a solid trade offer.
17. Brett is a J E T
That is pretty much it hitting most of the main points. The bottom line to all of this is Brett wanted to play and if the Packers weren’t interested they should have made accomodations for Brett via trade or release without all of the drama. Brett ends up going to a team with a realistic shot at making the playoffs. Meanwhile the Packers have a mess on their hands. They have a young, unproven QB they are behind. If he stumbles even a little the loyal fan base will revolt. If they miss the playoffs the coach and GM are gone. They have also had so much bad press the last month or so most key free agents are going to take a pass on the Packers, similar to the way free agents treated the Chicago Bulls for they way they ushered Mike, Phil and Scottie out of town.
The drama is pretty much over now. The Packers can now begin their downward spiral towards mediocrity and the Jets can begin their run to the playoffs. And no, I didn’t say division title, I said playoffs. My NFL predictions to come soon.

J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets! I’m thrilled about Brett Favre coming to Gang Green.

Who has the most pressure in the NFL now ?
-Eli Manning to repeat ?
-Tom Brady to go 19-0 ?
-Peyton Manning to repeat ?
-Kyle Orton to keep his starting job ?
-Arthur Blank to rebuild a franchise after the Vick/Petrino drama ?
-The Tuna to rebuild Miami in one year ?

IMHO, it’s McCarthy, Thompson and Murphy.
Was Favre 100% right on this ? No.
Can the Pack adjust to his unretirement ?
Why not ? How hard can it be to adjust to a top 10 of all time after passing for 4K yards and taking them to the NFC championship ?
Unless Rodgers has a rating over 100 every game, the press will skewer Rodgers and management.
Now, has there ever been more pressure on a franchise for success after the departure of a QB like Favre ? I doubt it.

Pressure! Some can handle it and some can’t. In re: to your comment I can only say this…
Eli – Tons of pressure and the team won’t be as good.
Tom Brady – Just the opposite. Very little pressure. NE is a professional organization and they have a HUGE chip on their shoulder.
Peyton – Very little pressure their as well. He has his ring so he is out for records. Wins are just the cherry on top at this point.
Kyle to keep his job? – You can’t stress about something you don’t have. The Bears are doing everything they can to start Grossman. Kyle is going to keep doing his thing and if he wins fine and if not I think he’ll be OK too.
Blank – Very little pressure. He is a good owner in a football crazy town. The key is QB Matt Ryan and I think he has a great face for the future of the franchise. They will lose this year but they are back on the right track.
Tuna – I actually think there is a lot of pressure in Miami and most it Tuna will put on himself. The team is a complete train wreck so a quick one or two year turn around is virtually impossible. If Tuna can be patient they can become a winner again.
The most pressure will indeed be on the Packers organization. When they limp into December a very mediocre squad and the Jets are marching towards a wildcard birth under Favre, the axe may indeed come down on Thompson. Someone has to be the sacrificial lamb. McCarthy just came off an NFC Championship game and the President isn’t going to can himself. The franchise will save face by launching Thompson after the 2008 season.
