Weak Wrestling Entertainment

I’ve been waiting.  I’ve been waiting quite a while.  I’ve been trying to figure out where this whole current story line is going.

First we had CM Punk and his pipe bombs and that was good.  We reached this epic high between Punk, HHH and Cena.  Then Alberto was waiting in the wings to cash in his $$$ in the Bank case.  Even that was OK but then something started happening.  Sure, there is always a level of soap operaness to wrestling.  You have to build the stories to set up the epic matches for the PPVs.  We get it.   However, something is going awfully wrong here.

Back stage management issues?  Firing guys?  Who let up the cage?  Who let these guys in here?  Are you kidding me right now?  Are you really trying to insult our intelligence?  And the Santino Marella match!  WTF was that.  I used to like this guy and the WWE has made him a joke.  The match was like 3 minutes long.  WASTE OF TIME!!!   The Divas “thing” whatever the hell that could be called was terrible.  Sorry Divas but Impact Knockouts OWN you big time.  But the sad thing is that it isn’t your fault.  There is talent there.  Oh well, I digress.  So, then the whole vote of confidence thing which took up the final 20 minutes and was a complete joke.  Oh, and where the hell was Punk, Cena, Orton, Sheamus, Kelly Kelly and Eve. for this “confidence vote”?  You think if it was mandatory that everyone would be there.   You think more than just Zach Ryder (off TV, SO DUMB) would have popped in and told HHH they were with him.  My son looked at me and said, “Dad, change this.  It’s boring.”  You are right son, this is boring and STUPID.  Why is it taking them SOOOOO long to set up this story line?   And they are doing it at the sake of the wrestlers.  There is a lot of great, young talent there getting ZERO TV time.

And really, ANYONE with half a brain can see what’s coming.  The talent relations guy works for Vinny McMahon.  They are setting up HHH to fail with the help of Nash, Miz and R-Truth (the new Outsiders?).  There might even be an NWO angle if they work in Mark Henry, Cody Rhodes, David Otunga, Vickie Guerrero and her two duds.  Cena, Orton, Sheamus and CM Punk will have to fight for their collective lives week after week until they get some help from a returning Rey Mysterio, Big Show, HHH or maybe the Undertaker.  That could be OK but why take so long to set it up and why spend 20 minutes of primetime TV with mind numbing chatter?

More importantly, where does the WWE go from there?  We have Cena v. Rock in the PPV tag match next month.  How does that fit in?  More importantly, where does Punk fit in.  He is at the top of his game and he is getting pops all around the country.  He is approaching HHH, Rock and Austin status and they are burying him with this stupid storyline.  Unless of course they find a way to work him in but I don’t see it at this time.

In this whole elaborately boring setup, too many guys that can’t work the microphone for that company are getting the mic.  BORING!!!!  Let’s cut to the chase.  Any a**hole can sit there and say, “um, why doesn’t HHH just ask for security camera footage of the dock areas and back stage to find out who is doing all the stuff that is causing him problems?” Problem resolved in one or two episodes TOPS.

WWE, I have been a fan for over 30 years so either you get this story moving or I’m out.  It isn’t like I have many other options as Impact Wrestling, with the exception of their awesome Knockouts, doesn’t have much to offer.  Crazy Joker Sting is terrible, Hogan is pretty much wheelchair bound and Flair needs to stay behind the scenes and OUT of the ring.  I guess Monday Night Football will have to do.

WWE PPV is Money in the Bank

I don’t typically post on sports entertainment but last night I took my son to WWE’s Money In The Bank Pay Per View and had a fantastic time.  It was certainly the fastest 3 hours of live entertainment I have ever attended

There were a couple of matches, the Diva match and the Big Show v. Mark Henry, that lacked energy and the crowd showed by sitting on their hands or chanting CM Punk’s name.   But, when you are up against two MITB Ladder matches and two World Championship matches, it is almost impossible to standout.

The ladder matches and Randy Orton v. Christian matches were very good and the WWE Championship match of Cena v. CM Punk was ridiculously good.  It reminded me of the old days when guys like Flair, Sting, Windham, Steamboat and the like would put on these marathon back-and-forth matches that would last 30…45…60 minutes.  I give props to Cena and Punk for putting on a match that should be considered a Match of the Year candidate.  I also give props to the WWE and C.M. Punk for the scripted build up to the match.  Absolutely classic!

Now, I watch boxing and MMA from time to time and even went to a couple of live events.  I can’t say there weren’t exciting moments but WWE certainly puts out a product that is far more entertaining and exciting.  From the fireworks to the acrobatic skill of the combatants to their raw power to the sexy Divas it is something the other “ring” sports can’t hold a candle to.

The WWE, and to a lesser extent TNA Impact Wrestling, have an exciting product with great athletes and even better story lines.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m not about to step in the ring with a boxer or MMA guy.  They are tough, quick, strong SOBs.  Unfortunately for their brand there is just as much down time as there is action.  Between the round breaks and the “hugging” they can easily lose the audience.  They also fail to market their up coming stars  Half of the time I feel like those guys in the diner in the movie Major League.  “Who are these f**kin’ guys?”

I am not sure what the ultimate solution is for boxing or MMA but all I am getting at is those organizations could learn a thing or two about packaging their products from a Vince McMahon or Eric Bischoff.

In closing, if you love, like or used to like pro wrestling, get the MITB PPV on replay or get the DVD when it comes out a few weeks from now.  It was really one of the better live events I’ve attended in a long time.  The energy from the crowd is contagious and the battles are classic.
