NORTH
Baltimore – OT certainly wasn’t a top need for Baltimore but they get Michael Oher anyways. Oher can start on either side but will be a back up for now. I love the pick of DE Paul Kruger in the 2nd Round. He can play down or up as an OLB in their 3-4 scheme. He should contribute right away. CB Lardarius Webb was a reach in Round 3. He could contribute on special teams and maybe some defensive packages. ILB Jason Phillips falls to the 5th Round and Baltimore’s LB corps gets stronger. RB Cedric Peerman is of great value with the last pick. He gives them a legitimate pass catcher out of the backfield. TE Drew might make the team as a back up and special teamer.
The Ravens failed to land a S and their #1 need, WR. FINAL GRADE C+
Pittsburgh – Can we say the rich get richer? DT Ziggy Hood is a very talented interior lineman. I had him going several picks before this but teams passed him up for some reason. OL Kraig Urbik is a very solid offensive lineman from Wisconsin. He can play either guard position or right tackle. Pittsburgh adds depth. WR Mike Wallace replaces WR Nate Washington. CBs Lewis and Burnett should add depth to Pittsburgh’s defensive backfield but I don’t project either guy as a starter. C A.Q. Shipley in the 7th Round is a steal. Most scouts had the Penn State C as a 5th Round value. DT Harris and TE Johnson will struggle to make the team. Pittsburgh addressed all of their need areas. FINAL GRADE B+
Cincinnati – The Bengals had a lot of picks and did some pretty good things with them. The first one was used on OL Andre Smith. Now I moved him way down my board for weight and attitude reasons but Cincy pick him #6 overall. The way I look at this pick is if they put him at G or RT I think it will work out well. If they project him as a LT I think they will be very disappointed. ILB Rey Maualuga with Keith Rivers sounds awesome on paper. However Rey isn’t very bright for a MLB and his only strength is up in the box. It depends on the scheme but this is a boom or bust pick. DE Michael Johnson was a great pick. He is a talented pass rusher and should contribute right away. TE Chase Coffman was also one of the steals of the draft. He should contribute immediately. C Jon Luigs, P Kevin Huber and RB Fui Vakapuna were all solid picks were they were taken and should contribute. RB Bernard Scott and DE Clinton McDonald were reaches and failed to draft a safety. FINAL GRADE B-
Cleveland – The Browns hit a homerun early with the picks of C Alex Mack and WR Brian Robiskie. Mack should anchor that line for a long time and Robiskie will be the go to receiver if Edwards is traded. WR Massaquoi is a big, physical threat and could start opposite Robiskie. DE David Veikune will start at LB in Cleveland’s 3-4. He is a quick penetrator who will see significant playing time. LB Maiva from USC was a great value. He is smart and should start soon. CB Cary and Francies are also great values where they were picked. They should contribute. 6th Round pick RB James Davis could be a nice surprise. He should produce behind RB Jamal Lewis. Cleveland did fail to land a S and TE. FINAL GRADE B
SOUTH
Jacksonville – The Jags needed help on the line and they got OT Eugene Monroe. He may be the best of this class and start on the Jags left side for the next 10 years. Props to the Jags for going offensive line two picks in a row nabbing OT Eben Britton. He will eventually start on the right side. DT Knighton was taken a little high but will provide some serious beef in the middle of the Jacksonville defensive line. Round 3 selection of William & Marry CB Derek Cox is a bit of a stretch. They could have had him at a much better value in Round 5. WR Mike Thomas should contribute immediately in the slot for Jacksonville even though they needed a bigger playmaker on the outside. WR Dillard from Rice might make the team as a 4th option. He has great hands. Liberty RB Rashad Jennings is a steal in Round 7. Most had him a 4th or 5th Round pick. He is a huge back that should compliment Jones-Drew very well. They failed to draft an OLB, a QB or a big-play WR. FINAL GRADE C+
Indianapolis – DT Ziggy Hood, WR Hakeem Nicks, WR Brian Robiskie, LB Rey Maualuga, LB James Laurinaitis and OT Eben Britton are still on the board and you reach with U Conn RB Donald Brown. I’m not saying Brown will be bad but they had other significant holes and better options. Addai and Hart are injury prone so if they do go down this pick suddenly makes a lot of sense. DT Fili Moala was taken in the 2nd Round and should start although he isn’t an impact player. CB Powers was a bit of a reach in Round 3. He has decent skills and should play some nickel and special teams. WR Austin Collie was a good pick in Round 4. He was a very productive WR and special teamer. DT Terrance Taylor was an OK pick. He is a short run stopper. He won’t help much in pass defense. QB Curtis Painter in Round 6 was a great pick. Purdue QBs do pretty well in the NFL. He may have a future as Peyton’s understudy for the next few years. P Pat McAfee will probably make the team after Hunter’s departure. They failed to land a LB in the draft. FINAL GRADE C
Houston – The Texans needed a stud LB and they got one. LB Brian Cushing will be the face of the defense for years to come. I love the pick of DE Connor Barwin in Round 2. Add Barwin to Okoye and Williams and you are talking an awesome defensive line. G Antoine Caldwell will provide O-Line depth. TE James Casey was a great value pick in Round 5. He is a great, pass catching TE. They also grabbed two decent CB prospects in Quin and McCain. They failed to pick a WR or RB in the draft. FINAL GRADE C+
Tennessee – They had a lot of picks and did pretty well. WR Kenny Britt could end up being the best WR of this draft. DT Sen’Derrick Marks is no Haynesworth but he should do well. TE Jared Cook will help stretch the middle of the field. Good pick. CB Ryan Mouton, LB Gerald McGrath and OT Troy Kropog were great picks where they were picked. They should make the team and contribute. Grabbing RB Javon Ringer near the end of Round 5 was a no-brainer. He now gives Tennessee a triple-threat backfield. The last 4 players taken will struggle to make this already deep team. The only thing Titans failed to do was draft a young QB. FINAL GRADE B+
EAST
Miami – The Dolphins picked up defensive backs in the off-season and continued to do so in the draft adding stud Illinois CB Vontae Davis and Utah CB Sean Smith. Davis should start right away and Smith should eventually start. QB Pat White is a great pick. He wants to play QB and Miami’s “Wildcat” offense allows him too. That should be very fun to watch. Mid-Round WR picks of Brian Hartline and Patrick Turner were brilliant. They add depth to a group that had none. Turner could end up being a #2 opposite Ted Ginn. Round 6 selection of OT Andrew Gardner was a good value pick. He should be able to hold down a back spot on the team. They did fail to address their needs on the defensive line. FINAL GRADE B
New England – The Patriots do very well with their box full of picks. SS Pat Chung and DT Ron Brace should both start immediately. They are both impact players. CB Darius Butler won’t start this year but he will shadow their vets for a year or two and then have a very long, successful career. OT Vollmer from Houston at the end of Round 2 is a reach. There were plenty of excellent OTs left. WR Brandon Tate had some issues recently but if healthy will be a significant contributor in the Patriot’s offense and special teams. OLB McKenzie from South Florida is a great value pick. He too will shadow the veteran linebackers for now and contribute on special teams. G Rich Ohrnberger was a good pick for New England. He adds depth to the interior offensive line. QB Julian Edelman from Kent State wasn’t on anyone’s board but they took him to run the New England version of the “Wildcat”. He will compete with free agent acquisition Brian Hoyer for the 3rd spot on the team. With 12 picks in the draft and a desperate need at RB the Patriots don’t draft one. Perhaps they have their eye on soon to be FA Edgerrin James. FINAL GRADE B
New York – Very good but very bad. The Jets had the balls to move up and take QB Mark Sanchez from USC. The problem is he is one of those boom or bust picks. Is he Carson Palmer or Matt Leinhart? He certainly has Palmer potential. The jury is out. Jets get great value nabbing RB Shonn Greene in Round 3. Thomas Jones is getting old and Shonn is the heir apparent. G Slaussen from Nebraska should make the team and add depth to the offensive line. They needed to address WR, D-Line and TE in the draft and didn’t. Perhaps they will in free agency. FINAL GRADE C
Buffalo – The Bills had a very nice draft. They reached a little on the first pick but they did get a versatile pass rusher in Aaron Maybin. He will start immediately. Wood and Levitre will add much needed depth to the interior offensive line. CB Jarius Byrd is vastly underrated and could start in his first season. Southern Miss TE Shawn Nelson will also start and stretch the field. Round 5 pick Nic Harris is a great pick. He plays S, LB and is a special teams contributor. CB Cary Harris is also a great pick for Buffalo in Round 6. They did fail to draft a much needed RB and WR. FINAL GRADE B+
WEST
Denver – You take RB Moreno with the first pick after signing RBs Buckhalter, Jordan and Arrington in the off-season? With all the defensive holes I’m not sure I agree with that. DE Ayers with the second pick was solid and he should contribute immediately. 2nd Round picks of CBs Smith and McBath were solid. I don’t see either one starting but they will both contribute and add depth. S David Bruton in Round 4 was a good idea. In Round 6 they add QB Tom Brandstater who is the perfect QB for their system. He’ll play behind Orton and Simms in 2009. The rest of the picks were offensive line depth and WR McKinney who might not make the squad. They needed help on the defensive side of the ball, particularly on the front 7 and only came away with a defensive end. FINAL GRADE C-
Oakland – WR Heyward-Bey #7 overall! Are you kidding me? They could have moved down 10 to 15 spots and still got him. No other team had him in the top 20. Not too mention the two best receivers, Maclin and Crabtree were still on the board. I don’t even think he was 3rd best. I like WRs Hakeem Nicks and Percy Harvin more than Bey. Then in Round 2 they pick little known SS Mike Mitchell from Ohio. Mel Kiper was kind in saying he “flew” up some draft boards late but c’mon. This guy wasn’t even invited to the combine and wasn’t on most team’s board. This guy in Round 2 is a joke. DE Matt Shaunessy in Round 3 is a bit of a reach. He is a developmental player. The best pick was probably WR Louis Murphy in Round 4. I thought he had 2nd Round talent. DEs Norris and Sulak are speed all the way and look like situational rushers and special teamers. TE Brandon Myers with the last pick is a reserve, run-blocking tight end. They also failed to land a LB, O-Linemen and CB. FINAL GRADE D-
San Diego – The pick of DE Larry English means they were stupid for passing up ILBs Maualuga and Laurinaitis or they are not confident of Merriman’s return. They drafted some much needed beef in G Vasquez, G Tyronne Green and DT Vaughn Martin. Vasquez and Green add much needed depth and one will probably replace Goff. DT Martin is a longshot. He is a Canadian player drafted based on an impressive workout day and intangibles. CB Brandon Hughes should be the nickel back and S Kevin Ellison of USC was a steal late in the draft. He is a smart, hard-nosed player who should contribute. The last pick of WR Demetrius Byrd could pay off a year or two down the road. If it weren’t for his untimely car accident he would have been selected in the 3rd or 4th Round. They did fail to secure a back up to Tomlinson. FINAL GRADE C+
Kansas City – DE Tyson Jackson is not the 3rd best player in the country. I thought LB Aaron Curry was a no-brainer here. Despite where Jackson was picked he should be a decent player and immediate contributor. DT Alex Magee in Round 3 is OK. I am not sure he is a starter in the NFL though. CB Donald Washington might make the team as a nickel back. G Colin Brown of Missouri adds depth and can play OT too. WR Quinten Lawrence will probably be the 4th or 5th receiver. RB Tavarris Williams from Tennessee State should do well. K Ryan Succop should also make the team. They failed to land a LB or S. FINAL GRADE C
